Sarah Freeman is the Food Access Coordinator for the County of Hawaiʻi and the facilitator for the Hawai’i Island Food Alliance. In her position she is developing a Food System Action Plan and works with diverse partners to increase collaboration, effectiveness, and efficiency of projects that focus on increasing residents' access to fresh local food and improving the food system. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Conservation and Resource Studies from UC Berkeley with a concentrated focus on urban agriculture, conflict resolution, and city repair. She moved to Hawai’i in 2017 and worked for HIP Agriculture as their Farm Manager and Managing Director. While at HIPAg Sarah supported the Kohala Farm to School and Garden to Cafeteria Pilot programs, developed the Kohala Food Hub, Post Secondary Apprenticeship Program, and the High School Internship Program. She currently serves on the Farm to School Hui Steering Circle, School Food Systems Circle, and is supporting development and implementation of Garden to Cafeteria Program Statewide. Sarah is part of the current Agriculture Leadership Program Cohort and works with statewide groups on local institutional purchasing, agriculture, food access, transforming food systems, and obesity prevention. At home, she stewards a five acre tropical fruit orchard and on the Hamakua Coast.
