All commercial and non-commercial motor vehicle safety inspection certificates and stickers that are expired are allowed an exemption and remain valid until the end of the Hawaii COVID-19 emergency period, currently December 31, 2020.  Your vehicle must be properly registered with the county vehicle registration office to legally operate on public roadways.

Please review HDOT's frequently asked questions for more information.

An expired safety inspection will not stop the registration of a vehicle.

Vehicle safety inspections may be obtained at authorized service stations and vehicle repair shops.

With the exception of certain commercial vehicles, most privately owned vehicles are issued a safety inspection certificate that is valid for one year. The following documents must be presented to the safety check inspector:

  • Vehicle Registration
  • Insurance identification card

When safety inspections are completed by inspection stations, the safety inspection information is updated electronically into the Statewide database. Updates may take up to 48 hours to reflect current safety inspection expiration date.

A copy of your safety inspection form may be submitted when renewing your registration by mail.
