Kyle Arakaki’s knowledge of the Zoo's history is not only impressive but has also been instrumental as we continue to develop and enhance the Zoo and Complex. His understanding of the various species, along with his infectious excitement for expanding the collection, is truly inspiring. Under Kyle's leadership, the staff has been working diligently to achieve both short-term goals and our overarching vision for the facility.
ABRAHAM MEDEIROS
2023 EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR
Abraham Medeiros’ efforts and Equipment Operator skills, along with his can-do attitude, have had a considerable positive impact on numerous projects within Parks and Recreation. Among his many accomplishments, he played a pivotal role in the preparation of Alae Cemetery for vital upgrades and fencing, created a parking lot at Keaau Community and Senior Center, and worked to reconstruct the Pana'ewa and Honoka'a rodeo arena surfaces.
REID SEWAKE
2023 Manager of the Year Nominee
As the Parks and Recreation Business Manager, Reid has the critical responsibility of overseeing a $40 million budget, ensuring the efficient allocation of resources, and providing strategic direction for the department's financial operations. His role involves a wide range of duties including financial planning, budget development and administration, resource allocation, risk management, and cost control for 9 distinct divisions:
The Department of Parks and Recreation made significant investments in the parks, demonstrating their commitment to enhancing the well-being of Hawaii Island families and communities.
- Successfully secured a substantial increase in a much needed park maintenance budget to maintain over 300 park facilities, upgrading it from a mere $450,000 in 2020 to slightly over $4 million in the Fiscal Year '23-'24.
- Several overdue projects were initiated, marking a new era of progress and development, including the transformation of Kealakehe Regional Park, Hilo Skate Park, Oceanview Skate Park, Laupahoehoe Boat Ramp repairs, and the creation of a regional park in Hawaiʻi Paradise Park.
- Over 14 projects dedicated to improving accessibility have been actively pursued or completed at popular parks throughout the island, ensuring that individuals with disabilities can enjoy the benefits of these public spaces.
- Comprehensive renovations are currently underway at Waiākea Uka Park, Pāpaʻaloa Covered Playcourt, and the Hilo Civic Auditorium, preserving and enhancing iconic park landmarks.
